Director, Case Development and Stewardship

After 75 years of progress, cures for multiple sclerosis are now within reach. Deepened engagement and investment in the Society is required to accelerate progress, changing the lives of 2.8 million people worldwide living with MS. The National MS Society is seeking a creative and compelling leader to serve as Director of Case Development and Stewardship who will help realize cures by inspiring long-term relationships and investments through best-in-class donor-centric communications, experiences and stewardship strategies.   


Under the oversight of the Associate Vice President of Donor Experience, the Director of Case Management and Stewardships leads the Society-wide stewardship plan designed to promote a robust donor pipeline and inspire deep, life-long relationships, with an emphasis on Giving Society annual and lifetime supporters, that help achieve the Society’s ambitious revenue growth goals. The Director also plays a key role in the ongoing evolution of the Society’s Case for Support and Philanthropic Funding Framework, ensuring the most compelling and inspiring case for investment in the Society is consistently woven across fundraising activities and is utilized effectively by staff and volunteers to increase giving and maximize the Society’s impact.


  Leadership of Society-wide Stewardship Plan 30% Design, direct and orchestrate the activities of the Society’s universal stewardship plan to inspire expanded and deepened engagement of all those who give back to the Society through their time, talent or treasure with the goal of developing a robust and dynamic pipeline of life-long supporters. Responsible for mapping all acknowledgement activities across the Society and working collaboratively across departments to continuously optimize communications and operational solutions, ensuring timeliness, accuracy and personalization that honors commitment and holistic contributions over time Design annual universal stewardship calendar, offering multi-channel impact and recognition communications and engagement opportunities that align to Society stewardship tiering Responsible for mapping all stewardship opportunities across the Society and provide direction on how universal anchor opportunities complement campaign specific opportunities Ensure donor relations principles are consistently emulated across all Society stewardship activities Ensure the stewardship plan is well-known throughout the organization and staff are leveraging opportunities to deepen relationships and deliver appropriate stewardship Develop solutions for analyzing universal funder acquisition and retention rates and procure rates by channel Oversee the Society’s Giving Society Provide direction and supervision to the Sr. Manager, Giving Society on the implementation of Giving Society program activities, including but not limited to monitoring membership (annual and lifetime), initiating welcome and upgrade communications, benefit/experience delivery, in-person and virtual event development and promotion, program pipeline analytics, metrics and revenue reporting, internal awareness, education and adoption, utilization of Society systems, including Salesforce CRM to prompt and track activities, external communications and marketing materials, annual donor surveys Collaborate with the AVP, Mid-Level Giving, Director, Direct Marketing and other Development AVPs on program acquisition and pipelining across revenue channels Assume responsibility of individualized stewardship and recognition for Lifetime Giving members and collaborate with Development colleagues to monitor and plan recognition for new qualifying Lifetime Fundraising members

Top Funder Stewardship (30%) Partner with Individual Giving, Foundation and Corporate Engagement leadership, Major Gift Officers and Account Managers, Marketing partners, functional staff experts and Society leadership to develop and deliver individualized stewardship plans, impact reports and creative recognition solutions for top funders with a deep focus on understanding personal, philanthropic and/or business motivations to inform strategies and deliverables Work with Individual Giving leadership and Director of Prospect Management to develop systematic and business process solutions for assigning loyalty pipeline donor stewardship and support

Oversee Case Development Activities (30%) Direct the ongoing evolution of the Society’s Case for Support and Philanthropic Funding Framework, ensuring messaging reflects the most compelling and timely narratives and that they are applied across the Society in consistent and powerful ways to inspire action and investment Work in collaboration with Director, Donor Experience and Marketing partners to maintain funding and impact resource suite, developing new materials and assets as needed, including but not limited to funding opportunity summaries, cultivation assets, donor and corporate proposal and impact report templates, videos and other impact and stewardship communications Work in collaboration with Marketing Content team to ensure universal impact assets meet the needs of Development and are framed with case messaging and donor relations principles in mind Provide direction and assume editorial responsibility for unique donor communications, including but not limited to cultivation assets, donor proposals, impact reports, event promotional materials, donor newsletters, etc. Lead cross-functional content development activities and assume writing responsibility for 7 and 8 figure proposals. Provide guidance on theme and content including scripting and speakers for in-person and virtual events, working in collaboration with fellow Donor Experience team members, Individual Giving and Corporate Engagement staff, functional staff experts and Society executive leaders.

Staff Supervision (10%) Responsible of supervision of Sr. Manager, Giving Society Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, and continued development of direct reports Conduct regular check-ins to monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer guidance and support where needed to ensure staff is fully supported in their role Ensures staff have the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to perform job duties effectively as well as opportunities for professional development Coach and collaborate on goal-setting and professional development plans and conduct formal and informal performance conversations Hold staff accountable to the cultural values of the organization and ensure they follow Society operating principles

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Arts or Science  

10+ years of related experience in lieu of degree

Minimum Experience:   Minimum 6-9 years progressive fundraising experience with individuals and track record for closing gifts and articulating a case for giving. You love to show love! You have 6+ years of proven success showing donors, fundraisers and volunteers love by implementing donor relations and stewardship plans in a non-profit environment. You are a natural leader and influencer. You have experience managing and influencing others, using your strategic thinking to guide the way. Y ou are exceptionally creative. You have d emonstrated ability to innovate creative strategies and solutions that go beyond industry trends. You are a writer at heart. You are a tech savvy development operations expert.  You understand the technical aspects of donor relations and stewardship, including acknowledgement and benefit tracking , pipeline development, moves management, event and digital platform savvy. You bring competency in utilizing a CRM to implement donor relations and stewardship activities (Salesforce preferred) You are committed to the Society’s mission. Technical/Other Advanced computer abilities (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Experience with use of fundraising CRM, Salesforce preferred Familiarity with online conferencing tools such as Zoom, GoToMeeting, Microsoft Teams

This position has oversight of content development , fundraising materials and stewardship asset budgets and is empowered to make decisions that affect these budgets.


Interpersonal and collaboration skills

Sensitive information concerning internal Society issues, staff, volunteers, and donors will be disclosed to this individual. This position must gain the confidence of a variety of leaders to develop positive relationships and to implement stewardship strategies. This requires a high level of competency in communication, organization, and conflict management. The individual should listen attentively, ask clarifying questions to gain a better understanding of the other person’s views and assumptions, and identify opportunities to address the other person’s needs, concerns, and goals.  Further, the individual should demonstrate flexibility and understanding in embracing change and contribute to implementing changes in a positive manner. 


Analysis and complexity in process management

This individual must possess or acquire technological, organizational, and analytical skills to properly manage and examine information across multiple systems. Development of new approaches and enhancement of current processes requires imagination, organizational skill, negotiation, and collaboration with a variety of other staff. This position will be responsible for simultaneous management of multiple activities, deadlines, and timelines. The ability to collect, analyze and report data in an understandable and consistent way is crucial.


Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $64,000 - 80,000 based on our average compensation schedule of Denver, CO.  Final offers will be based on candidate geographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
