Primary Purpose:

This position is primarily responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and developing SDG&E's mission critical Energy Management System (EMS) software with focus on system administration, scripting, system integration, system security, high system availability and reliability, NERC CIP compliance, and supporting Grid Control which operates on a 24x7 basis. The positions will require monitoring of all production and non-production EMS assets across different environment, supporting Grid Operations staff with EMS issues, participation in day to day operations, participation in the internal patch management process to ensure the EMS is up to date with all the latest critical and security patches as well as bug fixes, scripting and programming to enhance the internal system monitoring and situational awareness alerting, participation in the internal NERC CIP Compliance program. This position will participate in ongoing CIP compliance projects, software and hardware projects, EMS upgrade and replacement projects. This position requires participation in the 24x7 on-call rotation, occasional travel, and participation in various industry workgroups.


Duties and Responsibilities: Perform daily system health checks and evaluations. Monitor status and performance of all EMS assets, including servers, workstations, backups, storage, network to ensure system integrity, security, high availability, and high reliability. Maintain and develop custom scripts and programs used to automate tasks such as system monitoring, alerting and notifications, log gathering, and reporting. Evaluate and coordinate deployment of security and critical software patches, bug fixes, and software enhancements following the internal patch management process. Gather and submit test and production evidence for each software patch. Participate in EMS software and hardware upgrades or other projects, application development, testing, system deployments, and system integration to bring cutting edge tools and technology to our control center. Participate in the internal NERC CIP Compliance program (CIP-002 through CIP-013) including reviews of logs, reports, evidence, processes, procedures, documentation, and potentially serve as a subject matter expert witness during mock audits and WECC audits. Monitor and control user and vendor access to critical systems. Create EMS user accounts, provision and revoke access to various critical and non-critical systems. Assist new users with EMS account set up, two factor authentication, and password set and resets. Manage service accounts. Assist and support team members and end users in resolving operational issues that impact EMS availability. Make recommendation on how to resolve operational issues and prevent future occurrences. Recover and repair from hardware and software failures. Work with EMS vendor and 3 rd parties to meet operational requirements. Coordinate and clearly communicate with Electric Grid Operation staff whenever system issues impact availability and/or an outage is required. May provide support for, or participate in, SCADA Database, PMU, advanced applications, training simulator, RTU set up, point to point testing, ICCP on a limited basis. Participate in cross-training for all integrated real-time control systems, maintain software documentation library and update operating procedures. Participate in company-wide efforts to integrate data communication networks to provide power system data to company's internal staff, other utility companies and California ISO. Keep up with the latest developments in the utility industry, to meet NERC, FERC or WECC standards and regulatory requirements, and California deregulation requirements. Participation in the 24/7 on-call rotation required. Occasional travel required. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information System, or equivalent experience and/or training. 3+ years of experience related to Energy Management Systems/SCADA, software development, and operational support of real-time control systems. Must possess working knowledge of software/application technologies: Office software Unix, Linux, Windows, Oracle, OSISoft PI, Shell Programming or programming languages such as Python, C, C++, PowerShell. 2+ years of experience on supporting distributed (client/server environment) computer system. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Must possess ability to solve complex problems. Must possess ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and projects that vary in priority and complexity. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team setting, fast-paced and, at time stressful environment.
