Job Description

Position Title:  Steel Fabricator, Military

Location of Position:  United States -- Wisconsin -- Sturgeon Bay

Business Group:  Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding

Department:  Military Fabrication

Position Type:  Full-Time; Permanent; Non-Exempt

Reports To:  Area Manager

 

Position Summary:  This position is responsible for erecting and fabricating of the Department of Defense military vessels at our vast, 63-acre facility.

 

Detailed Description: Follows directions under intermittent supervision. Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications using squares, rulers and measuring tapes. Align and fit parts according to specifications. Move parts into position either manually or with hoists or cranes. Using blueprints, form complete units through positioning, aligning, fitting and welding to high accuracy. Determine materials required and task sequences through drawings and blueprints from engineering. Set up and operate fabricating and welding equipment within set parameters. Lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met. Tack-weld fitted parts together. Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders and/or cutting torches. Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to work pieces. Position and tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps or bolt parts for welding or riveting. Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies. Design and construct templates and fixtures with hand tools. Hammer, chip and grind work pieces to cut, bend and straighten metal. Straighten warped or bent parts using acceptable methods. Weld components in flat, vertical or overhead positions to a high level of quality using various processes such as FCAW, MIG, SAW and TIG. Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits. Operate hand and power tools common to the fabricating trade. Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using flux-core arc to fuse metal segments. Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors. Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies. Gouge metals using an air-arc gouging process. Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds. May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required. Attendance is an essential function of the job. Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront. Abide by safety and sanitation regulations. Maintain a commitment to and promote the Quality Policy. Abide by all organizational policies and procedures.

Physical Demands: At least two times a day carry a 50lb bucket of tools and supplies to and from job site, including but not limited to, walking up to 500', climbing ladders / stairs, and crawling through a 23"x15" lightening hole. Frequently utilize Grinder / Torch / Welder, including in confined space, by lifting 14lbs from the floor, carrying 50', and pushing up to 20lbs of force overhead, while kneeling and lying in different positions including 34" inner bottoms. Occasionally utilize Chain Jack, Porta Pull, and Porta Power to position components for welding by lifting 48lbs from floor, hooking on a 72" pad eye, and pushing / pulling up to 150lbs of force. Fairing the bilge for bolting clips by lifting 22lbs and reaching over a 48" ledge. On a weekly basis move fans by lifting 85lbs from the floor, carrying 15' in flexed posture under the section and placing it on the floor. Occasionally lift crane hoods and dog clamps by lifting 47lbs from the floor, carrying 25', and placing at 30". At least two times a day position mobile welders at the job site by pushing / pulling 50lbs for 50'. Occasionally lift from the floor and carry 65lb strong backs and 12x12 blocks 15' and place on the floor. Utilize small tools to manipulate small parts for installation and/or repair by gripping / pinching with 10lbs of force.
